What we found was the amount spent during the “start up” phase varied wildly between students because they didn’t have guardrails to their spending. Often the excitement of owning a new business can lead to overspending on things that actually don’t “move the needle” for the business, and end up leaving you more in debt instead of driving revenue.
That’s why we’ve designed tailored pathways for different “mama types” throughout our curriculum. These pathways can help advise you to stay out of unnecessary debt, and identify the best financial and time strategies for your unique situation.
Here’s how to get started on the right foot, first you need to identify which mama entrepreneurial type you are.
The Mama Pathway Breakdown
- Hustle Mama (more money, less time) With financial stability from a well-paying job, this mama can invest $15k-$25k in her business during year one. Limited time availability means focusing on efficient systems that will allow her to buy back some of her time.
- Boxed Mama (more time, less money): Balancing higher time availability but less financial stability, this mama typically can only invest $5k-$15k over her first year in her business. Strategic spending and leveraging free resources are key to her long-term success.
- Stuck Mama (less time, less money): With under $5k to invest, lower time availability, and less financial stability, she faces challenges but can thrive by starting small and growing gradually, leaning into our lessons on resourcefulness and ways to get started small.
Becoming a Rainmaker Mama
Our program is designed to guide you ultimately towards becoming a Rainmaker Mama — a woman who enjoys both time and financial flexibility while building a business. We emphasize planning, community support, and smart investments to ensure your growth is sustainable and free from unnecessary debt.
Heed the Disclaimers, They Are There To Help You!
Throughout our entire curriculum, we have strong disclaimers on any lesson that may include something that could cost you more money. Often it will look something like this lesson on LLC entity creation where we mention a company called Prime who can help:
As you can see, for our hustle mamas (more money, less time), working with a company who handles all the legal entity creation stuff for you is a massive time saver, so it might make sense for her to look into it. But for our boxed or stuck mamas, there may be other alternatives that may require more time but less money.
These disclaimers are all throughout the course, providing guardrails and advice regarding services that may require more spending. However, following them is ultimately your responsibility, as we can only provide guidance but cannot be standing next to you during every decision you make in your business journey.
Starting an e-commerce business is a cash-hungry business, and buying inventory to keep your store running takes capital. Often when digging in with those students who ended up in debt, we found they were not following these disclaimers. We know it’s tempting to cut a paycheck to take a shortcut, however, if you only have a certain amount of finances devoted to your business start-up, protect that amount and don’t overspend (especially not on revenue-driving parts of your business).
