How Much Should I Budget When Starting My Ecommerce Business?

Starting an Amazon business can be exciting, but budgeting is key to long-term success. It’s extremely important that you budget for the types of products you’re going after. Your starting budget will determine your product type, inventory size, and sourcing method, and you also must plan for recurring monthly expenses. You can be successful with any qualified product on Amazon with the right budget.

If you’re going after products with a really high search volume, or really competitive products, you’re going to need a higher budget. If you’re going after products with a lower search volume and are not very competitive, you don’t need as much money. It may take several months to see profit while covering upfront investments. Prioritize reinvesting profits to expand your inventory and marketing efforts to drive sustained business growth.

We’ve had people start with $1,000 and we’ve had people start with $100,000 – and those people act very differently in product research.

One good rule of thumb that you can remember is the 2.5x rule.

Following the 2.5x Rule

Say your budget for your first product investment is $10,000. It is recommended to only spend $4k on that first round of inventory [ $10k ÷ 2.5 = $4k ]. This gives you breathing room to have the funds to reorder when your product is selling well or the ability to pivot and do it again…without stretching your initial budget too thin.

Careful budgeting like this ensures a smoother journey as an Amazon seller, helping you stay profitable and prepared for scaling opportunities.
